Case Study Aviation High-tech: Saving and archiving test flight data
Cassidian, the security and defence company of EADS uses the GRAU DATA archive manager for HSM-based adminstration of test flight data
Schwäbisch Gmünd, May 2013 – The majority of industrial companies consider their data to be a valuable commodity. However, some companies’ data is more valuable and sensitive than others’ and losing that data can have devastating consequences for the progress of a given project and it can only be restored with large financial and logistical investments. One example of this type of valuable, sensitive data would be test flights in the aircraft manufacturing sector. In order to ensure that this data is saved redundantly and archived, data administration in Cassidian’s military aircraft centre in Manching now uses the GRAU DATA archive manager and its included HSM file system.
“The data from our test flights must never be lost, because analysing flight test data is essential for developing and improving our flight systems," says Günter Müller, IT Department Head of Cassidian’s test flights at the Manching military aircraft centre.
Cassidian, the defence wing of the EADS, is a leading global provider of defence and security solutions. The company supplies ultramodern defence systems for the entire functional chain: from sensors to command systems to fighter jets and drones. In the security division, Cassidian has developed solutions around the world for border surveillance systems, cyber-security, and safe communication systems. Cassidian’s military aircraft centre is located in Manching. One of this facility’s primary functions is to develop and test all military aircraft. The data’s sensitivity and irreplaceability could hardly be more extreme than at Cassidian. That is why multiple, absolutely reliable and redundant data storage is indispensible.
Starting point
In the past, Cassidian used to use an older system for storing sensitive and important data, dispersing it among various storage banks. However, the company had to conform to the software’s predetermined structures and data amount limitations, which was not always easy or practical in a highly dynamic, sensitive environment. In the end, the previous system went end-of-life and support was halted. This was the crucial moment in which Cassidian decided to install a new solution. In addition to high scalability and functionality, the Manching-based
Cassidian company was intrigued by the enormous flexibility in several dimensions of GRAU DATA’s archiving system. This system can realise processes that the IT team has long desired but could not implement due to the limitations of the previous system.
Flexible HSM adapts to IT strategy
The GRAU DATA archive manager is a tiered storage HSM and archiving software program for Windows and Linux platforms. The solution is highly scalable and lets you use between 1 terabyte to several petabytes. The archive manager is completely independent from the hardware and can be used in combination with the systems of all important manufacturers for performance disk, archive disk, or LTO band archives. Existing infrastructures such as Cassidian’s high-end SAN, which is based primarily on FalconStor solutions, Transtec’s secondary disk system, or Sony’s LTO4-based band archive, can be integrated with GRAU DATA’s archive manager seamlessly.
GRAU DATA’s archive manager ensures that Cassidian’s demands for flexibility and extremely high data security are met. Together with their partner and reseller GID, the archive manager was integrated into Cassidian’s existing data storage infrastructure in early 2011 and, following comprehensive testing using custom-programmed routines and rules, was released online in April.
Hierarchical storage
With Cassidian’s test flights, around 100 GB of data was produced per flight. This data was then analysed by engineers for use in continued development. On average, Cassidian's test flights in Manching produce about 15 TB per year of uncalibrated raw data—a figure that does not include backup storage.
The test flight data is stored inside the aircraft inside shockproof, temperature-controlled boxes on solid state disks. In the first step, the raw data are copied onto a high-performance SAN at Cassidian. At the same time, the first data backup occurs on an LTO4 tape. This ensures that the raw data are saved numerous times at different locations so they cannot be lost. In the next step, the raw data are calibrated on the SAN and processed. It is only in this condition that the data can be used by the engineers for analysis. The prepared data are available for about two weeks on the high-access SAN for immediate analysis before they are automatically transferred by the GRAU DATA archive manager to a less highly-powered secondary disk RAID, where they are simultaneously archived in the band archive. The Petabyte GRAU DATA HSM file system provides the main functionality for moving, copying, and archiving data from the GRAU DATA archive manager. The processes and rules that govern automated data transfer to the various storage pools were written and programmed by Cassidian.
“We chose the GRAU DATA archive manager because it is reliable, powerful, and especially capable of adapting to our needs and structures. It allows us to change our processes at any time without being bound by the rigid structures of classic archiving systems,” explained Müller.

GRAU DataSpace 2.0 Chosen as Product of the Month
Schwäbisch Gmünd, February 5, 2013 – GRAU DataSpace 2.0 file-sharing solution was chosen as product of the month in a survey of readers of SearchStorage. GRAU DataSpace is a secure platform that enables businesses to make available data in the cloud to more than 100,000 coworkers and also allows those coworkers to share the data in compliance with legal regulations. With GRAU DataSpace, uncontrolled data sharing via public and insecure consumer platforms can be replaced by a secure in-house solution, and email traffic can be significantly reduced by decreasing the volume of the attached files. Version 2.0 of GRAU DataSpace, which offers additional functions, will be available starting in May 2013.
“The results of the readers’ survey clearly show us that businesses have a great need for file-sharing products. But the results also make it clear that businesses are becoming increasingly aware of the problems related to data security and compliance in publically accessible file-sharing products. They’re realizing that action needs to be taken to address these issues,” explains Herbert Grau, chairman of the board of GRAU DATA AG.
The readers’ survey was carried out by SearchStorage.de in January 2013.

GRAU DATA releases OpenArchive.
Schwäbisch Gmünd, Germany, March 11, 2009. Effective immediately, the GRAU DATA AG will release its
OpenArchive archiving software as open source. This high-performance software product is ideal for businesses that need secure, long-term archiving for a large number of files and a constantly growing volume of data.
OpenArchive offers nearly all of the functions of
ArchiveManager archiving software, i.e. GRAU DATA’s license-obligatory product, which is used by more than 160 customers around the world. Scaleable from one terabyte to several petabytes,
OpenArchive can readily integrate existing hardware such as RAID systems, Linux servers and/or LTO-based tape libraries.
In addition to the greatest possible data security (because as many copies as desired can be saved locally and/or remotely), the choice of storage media is also entirely free. Whether one opts for a disk storage system, magnetic tapes or a combination of the two,
OpenArchive supports the option of a custom-tailored, tiered-storage solution.
The original file structure is preserved, so users can access data in their accustomed manner. And compatibility to existing and future archiving applications such as DMS, e-mail, files, audio, video, PACS and engineering makes OPENARCHIV an open solution with a bright future.
At
www.OpenArchive.net, the software can be downloaded to be used productively as a virtual machine for testing or as source code on the basis of Linux Red Hat or SuSe. The Affero General Public License was chosen as a license model.
GRAU DATA decided in favor of the open-source model for two reasons: on the one hand, to give its customers the greatest security in caring for and further developing the software; and, on the other hand, to achieve worldwide dissemination of
OpenArchive.
GRAU ArchiveManager replaces the HP File System Extender
Hewlett Packard ceased active sales of the File System Extenders, the OEM product from GRAU DATA on 1 December, 2007.
With over 150 installations throughout the world, the product has proven itself to be a hardware-independent, stable and scalable archiving solution for the Windows and Linux platforms. GRAU DATA will, as a result, increasingly promote the sales of their own product the
ArchiveManager.
GRAU DATA will migrate existing HP FSE customers over to the
ArchiveManager. This is an unproblematic task as both products are binary compatible. In August 2008, HP sent the following message to all of their FSE clients.
Sales of the
ArchiveManager as well as the derivative products will, in future, be carried out via HP C&I as well as qualified ILM sales partners in Europe and the USA.

To: HP File System Extender (FSE) Customers
Subject: Additional HP FSE Support and Migration Options
Date: August, 2008
Dear (FSE Customer),
The end-of-life for the HP File System Extender (FSE) product was announced in December of 2007 with HP support for FSE discontinuing as of December 1st, 2010. As specified in that announcement, HP will support the FSE product as defined below for existing HP FSE software customers with an active FSE service contract: through the end-of-life period.
-
Access to HP to place support calls;
-
Access to defect fixes as made available by HP. HP will continue to review reported FSE software defects and address critical issues. However, HP will not add new features or new functionality to the FSE software;
-
Support renewals that expire before Dec 1 2010 are permitted within the discontinuance period.
To better meet our customer’s needs, HP has been working closely with Grau Data Storage (GDS), the technology owner of the FSE product, to deliver additional product and support migration options for current HP FSE customers. As a result, Grau Data Storage has agreed to offer HP FSE customers with active HP multiyear support contracts an early migration to GDS’ own branded product and support. For customers who chose this option, HP will refund the remaining balance of FSE support fees already paid to HP. GDS can provide your business with a swift, seamless and non disruptive migration to the GDS
ArchiveManager product from the HP FSE product and in addition, you would receive new GDS
ArchiveManager product features and updates as soon as they are released.
Key Points:
-
GDS is the Original Equipment Manufacturer of FSE
-
GDS ArchiveManager and HP FSE are binary compatible, so GDS ArchiveManager can read all data and metadata written by FSE.
-
GRAU has already successfully migrated multiple FSE customers to ArchiveManager in the last few months.
For additional information on GDS products and support, please contact Harry Weik, Sales Manager Grau Data Storage, Harry_Weik@Graudatastorage.de, office +49 7171 187 240, mobile +49 173 9086 146.
